Oswald Stephen Roughan was born 2nd November 1876 at Sialkot, India, to John Roughan and Elizabeth May Duffy. He was the eldest of four brothers, Oswald joined the 6th Dragoons 5011, and served in South Africa during the Boer War earning the Queens South African and the Kings South African Medals.

He was sent to France 12 Aug 1914, then he was transfered to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps R/549, 21 Jan 1915, promoted to troop sergeant and served through the Great War.
